Zurkhaneh, the home (Khaneh) of strength (Zur), is a traditional Iranian-style gym where athletes exercise ancient sports. Zurkhaneh was the main place for wrestling until the mid-20^th century. Even though it was replaced by international wrestling, many athletes continued the rituals. In this tour, we will visit one of the hidden parts of Iranian life that is registered in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Athletes in Zurkhaneh are accompanied by a live traditional song and music by someone called “Morshed” who is sitting in an elevated and decorated area. He plays a drum and chants Persian poetry. This is one of the most attractive and unique parts of this sport. Sport with live music!

When you enter Zurkhaneh through a low door, you need to bow in respect. Gowd, a round or hexagonal sunken area with a one-meter depth, is in the middle for the men to practice. Also, there are different equipment and tools that the athletes work with.
